—The Booklife Prize

Can love survive in such dark times, or is it fated to die with them?

Thais Fenwick was eleven years old when civilization fell, devastated by a virus that killed off most of the world’s population. For seven years, Thais and her family lived in a community of survivors deep in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. But when raiders attack her town, she and her blind sister are taken away to the East-Central Territory, destined to live the cruel and unjust kind of life about which her late mother warned her.

Atticus Hunt is a troubled soldier in Lexington City who has spent the past seven years trying to conform to the vicious nature of men in a post-apocalyptic society. He knows that to survive, he must abandon his morals and conscience and become like those surrounding him. But when he meets Thais, morals and conscience win over conformity, and he risks his rank and life to help her. They escape the city and set out together on a long and dangerous journey to find safety in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Struggling to survive in a world without electricity, food, shelter, and clean water, Atticus and Thais shed their fear of growing too close, and they fall hopelessly in love. But can love survive in such dark times, or is it fated to die with them?

A Message from the Author

Dear Reader,

Thank you for your interest in Everything Under the Sun. Before you dive into the story, I wanted to offer a personal note regarding its content, especially for my fellow Christians who may be sensitive to language and dark themes in fiction.

This novel was originally written before I gave my life to Jesus Christ. At the time, my values and worldview were very different from what they are now. Since coming to know the Lord, everything in my life—including the way I write—has changed.

As part of the editing process to make Everything Under the Sun more aligned with my Christian convictions, I have made many important changes. Most notably, I have removed all instances where God’s name was used in vain—phrases like “god***mit,” “Jesus Christ!” (used irreverently), and “holy sh*t” have been taken out entirely. This was non-negotiable for me, and I knew the story could not honor God if I left those moments untouched.

Additionally, I have reduced the overall use of profanity throughout the book. Many curse words have been softened, swapped out, or cut completely. That said, this story contains troubled, broken, and godless characters—people who reflect the rawness of life before redemption. In many places, I chose to keep strong language because removing it would have stripped the dialogue of its realism and power. These decisions were made carefully and prayerfully, with discernment.

It’s also important to note that this book includes a depiction of suicide, scenes of extreme violence, and suggestive sexual content. These elements were part of the original story and were not written with a redeemed heart or a desire to glorify God. I’ve edited what I could without compromising the integrity of the narrative, but some of these darker moments remain.

Any book I publish that is not written for children will always include a disclaimer when mild, strong language, or mature themes are present so that you, the reader, can make an informed decision based on your convictions.

I am grateful for your grace as I continue to grow in both faith and craft. This story is a reflection of my journey—both who I was and who I am becoming in Christ.

With love in Him,
